What to pack on a Rubicon 3 trip: part 2

Rubicon 3 Packing List for the Following Trips:

  • Windward Islands
  • Leeward Islands
  • Jamaica to Cuba
  • Cuba
  • Bahamas
  • All Caribbean racing trips

Sailing in the Caribbean is all about sunshine, warm breezes, and crystal-clear waters. Packing the right gear will keep you comfortable and prepared, whether you’re relaxing on deck, racing hard or exploring tropical islands. This list has been carefully adjusted for the warm, tropical climate of the Caribbean.

Luggage and Storage

Your gear should be compact and easy to stow. Space is ample, but it’s always better to pack efficiently.

  • Bag (Around 60 – 90 litres): A soft, collapsible duffel bag, like the Gill Voyager 60L, is ideal. If you prefer wheels, the Gill Rolling Cargo Bag 60L is a great alternative.
  • Plastic bags for organization: Use plastic shopping bags to keep your clothes organized and dry. They’re also handy for separating laundry.

Sleeping and Comfort

The Caribbean nights are warm, so heavy bedding isn’t necessary.

  • Sleeping bag liner or light sheet: A lightweight sleeping bag liner or just a sheet will be plenty for the warm nights. Bring two so that you can have fresh ones half way through
  • Pillowcase (bring 2): We’ll provide the pillow – just bring your favorite pillow cases.
  • Single bed sheet (bring 2): This will cover the mattress for added comfort.

Clothing

The Caribbean climate is warm and sunny, so keep it light and comfortable.

  • 4 pairs of underwear
  • 4 pairs of thin socks: Thick socks aren’t needed, so stick to lighter options.
  • 6 T-shirts/shirts: Pack more short sleeves and lightweight materials to stay cool.
  • 1-2 pairs of lightweight trousers: Choose breathable, lightweight long trousers for sun protection.
  • 2 pairs of shorts: Perfect for warm days on and off the boat.
  • 2 swimsuits: With lots of chances to swim, you’ll be glad to have an extra.
  • 1 lightweight fleece top: A single lightweight fleece or jumper is fine for cooler evenings if needed.
  • Light rain jacket: A light, breathable jacket is helpful for tropical rain showers.

Footwear

Safety and comfort are important on deck, and lighter shoes are sufficient for the Caribbean.

  • Deck shoes or trainers: Choose shoes with good grip for on-deck use. You don’t need to worry about non marking soles.
  • Flip flops: Ideal for going ashore or for use in marina showers (just not allowed on deck!).

Accessories for Sun Protection and Comfort

The Caribbean sun is strong, so come prepared to stay cool and protected.

  • Sun hat or cap: A wide-brimmed hat or cap is perfect for sun protection.
  • Sun protection (Factor 50+ sunscreen and UV lip balm): The tropical sun can be intense, so high SPF is essential.
  • Polarized sunglasses with neck strap: Polarized lenses will cut down on glare, and a strap ensures they stay on.
  • Sailing gloves (optional): Gloves can be useful for rope handling but aren’t essential here.

Miscellaneous Essentials

These items will keep you comfortable and prepared during your adventure.

  • Washbag: A washbag with a hook is handy for small marina showers. Bring essentials like toothbrush, toothpaste, shampoo, and deodorant.
  • Towel: Bring a normal bath towel or a sports towel.
  • Seasickness medication: Even in calmer waters, it’s helpful to have on hand.
  • Water bottle: Staying hydrated is essential, especially in the heat.
  • Head torch (with red lens): Great for hands-free lighting if you’re on a trip with overnight passages, but also often useful in marinas etc after dark.
  • Passport, insurance details, and personal medication: Always bring your ID and any required prescriptions.
  • Sailing logbook: Record your miles and get passages signed off.

Non-Essential Extras

These extras aren’t required, but they can add comfort to your trip.

  • Ear plugs: Handy for a good night’s sleep. These are recommended
  • Eye drops: Salt and wind can dry your eyes, so eye drops are a helpful addition.
  • UK 3-pin adapter: We use UK sockets, so international travelers should bring an adapter.
  • Favorite condiments: Love a particular hot sauce or tea? Feel free to bring it.
  • Headphones, book/Kindle/notebook: Great for unwinding off watch.
  • Clip on USB fan: Makes a big difference to keeping cool at night. Make it a clip on one.
  • USB to USB-C adaptor: We have USB ports on board, so you may need to bring an adaptor
  • Snorkel & fins: We do provide some on board, but if you want the perfect kit, bring your own.

What Not to Bring

We provide commercially coded life jackets and Personal Locator Beacons, so please don’t bring your own as you will not be allowed to use them.
