The wind and weather at the time will determine exactly what we do and when. Below is a possible itinerary to give an example of how this offshore sailing trip could run.

Join the yacht for initial sailing and training in Nassau

The journey begins in Nassau, a city steeped in Caribbean culture and maritime charm. Home to Bay Street’s vibrant energy and the famous Straw Market, Nassau offers a taste of Bahamian life with its handcrafted souvenirs, conch fritters, and rock lobster delicacies. Here, crew members join the yacht and familiarize themselves with the vessel, its systems, and essential safety procedures. After lunch, we’ll set sail, using the first afternoon to build skills and confidence as a crew. By evening, we’ll likely anchor near a secluded cay, surrounded by crystal-clear waters teeming with marine life.

Training and exploring in the Abacos Islands

Weather permitting, the next day will be spent honing sailing skills amidst the stunning Abacos Islands. This area is a sailor’s paradise, with its turquoise waters, quiet anchorages, and fascinating history. We may head to Great Guana Cay or visit Man-O-War Cay, known for its boat-building legacy. The iconic candy-striped lighthouse at Elbow Cay in Hope Town is another potential stop, blending maritime heritage with breathtaking scenery. Alongside training in navigation, sail trim, and seamanship, these islands provide a rich backdrop for spotting dolphins, sea turtles, and other marine life, adding to the adventure.

Offshore passage sailing from the Bahamas to Norfolk, Virginia

With skills sharpened, we embark on the 700-nautical-mile passage to Norfolk, Virginia, a true test of offshore sailing. Leaving the Bahamas behind, the horizon stretches endlessly as we settle into the rhythm of life at sea. Watch rotations, typically three hours on and six hours off, become second nature. Duties include navigation, cooking, maintaining a sharp lookout, and adjusting sails as needed.

The open ocean offers moments of profound beauty: endless stars, fiery sunrises, and the chance to spot dolphins, oceanic birds, or even whales. Each day, you’ll gain hands-on experience and deeper insight into the elements that define offshore sailing. After four or five days at sea, the distinct shape of Cape Hatteras signals our approach to Norfolk (weather and timing permitting). Sailing into the bustling harbor, past the colossal warships of Naval Station Norfolk, marks a significant milestone in the journey.

Sail from Norfolk, Virginia, to New York City

Leaving the historic port of Norfolk, we embark on the final leg of this offshore adventure, a direct sail north to the heart of New York City. The passage covers over 300 nautical miles of open ocean and coastal waters, testing the skills and routines you’ve honed throughout the journey. The busy shipping lanes and shifting conditions along this stretch demand vigilance and precision, offering one last opportunity to refine navigation and watch-keeping techniques.

As dawn breaks on the final approach, Staten Island emerges from the horizon, signaling our entry into New York Harbor. The transition from the open Atlantic to the bustling waterways of the city is both exhilarating and humbling. Sailing under the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge, the Statue of Liberty rises into view: a moment of pure triumph for every sailor aboard.

Finally, the Manhattan skyline looms ahead, marking the end of a remarkable journey. The sight of the towering skyscrapers and the realization of having sailed into one of the world’s most iconic cities is unforgettable. This final arrival serves as the perfect culmination of an extraordinary offshore sailing adventure.
