This sample itinerary highlights some of the possible options for the passage from Newfoundland to Greenland. The wind and weather conditions at the time will determine the exact route and activities. Here is a selection of potential highlights.

St. John’s – Training and Departure Preparation

We begin the adventure in the port city of St. John’s, where maritime history meets the natural beauty of the North Atlantic. We’ll spend the first day training on board, covering essential safety drills, sail handling, navigation, and teamwork. Take in the views of Signal Hill and the iconic Cabot Tower, marking the gateway to the journey ahead.

Bay de Verde

We can sail north along Newfoundland’s rugged coastline to Bay de Verde, a picturesque fishing village steeped in tradition. Here, we can anchor and explore the coastline’s dramatic cliffs and sheltered coves. A short hike offers breathtaking views of the Atlantic and the chance to spot seabirds, including puffins. Ashore, you may meet friendly locals proud to share their heritage.

Twillingate – The Iceberg Capital

Further north is Twillingate, known as the “Iceberg Capital of the World.” Here we may see towering icebergs drifting south from Greenland. The village offers a charming harbor, local museums, and seafood dining. Explore ashore or enjoy a hike to Long Point Lighthouse for panoramic views of the coastline.

Offshore Passage to Greenland

We must leave Newfoundland’s coastline behind as we head into the open waters of the North Atlantic. Expect six days of offshore sailing as we cross the Labrador Sea, with the rhythm of the ocean guiding us. This is a time for honing your navigation skills, spotting marine wildlife, and experiencing the vastness of the open sea – and dodging the odd iceberg!

Arsuk Fjord – Glaciers and Wildlife

A possible landfall in Greenland is at Arsuk Fjord, one of Greenland’s most stunning waterways. This fjord is home to majestic glaciers, abundant Arctic wildlife, and deep-blue waters. Anchor in a protected cove, perfect for launching a kayak or venturing closer to the ice. Keep an eye out for seals, Arctic foxes, and even musk oxen grazing on the slopes. This is a place to feel truly connected to nature’s grandeur.

Paamiut Fjords – Greenland’s Wild Coastline

We could sail north to Paamiut, a small and welcoming settlement known for its colorful houses and traditional Greenlandic culture. We can anchor near the fjord’s mouth, surrounded by dramatic mountain peaks. Ashore, explore the local church, renowned for its intricate architecture, or take a walk to enjoy the untouched beauty of Greenland’s wilderness. Expect to encounter friendly locals and perhaps even sled dogs.

Ivittuut – Abandoned Mining Settlement

There’s the possibility to anchor near the abandoned mining town of Ivittuut, once a major source of cryolite. Here you can wander through the eerie remnants of this historical site, surrounded by Greenland’s rugged beauty. The area is a fascinating blend of human history and natural wonder, with plenty of photographic opportunities.

Qeqertarsuatsiaat – Remote Serenity

We may sail to the small settlement of Qeqertarsuatsiaat, nestled in a beautiful fjord. This is an opportunity to immerse yourself in the tranquility of Greenland’s remote communities. Go ashore to meet residents who maintain a traditional lifestyle or hike into the surrounding hills for sweeping views of the icy wilderness.

Nuuk Fjord – Greenland’s Largest Fjord System

Enter the vast Nuuk Fjord, a maze of channels, inlets, and towering peaks. We may spend two days exploring this extraordinary region, anchoring in secluded coves to experience Greenland’s untouched nature. Opportunities for activities abound, from fishing and kayaking to glacier walks and wildlife spotting. This is one of the most breathtaking areas of the voyage.

Kapisillit – Glacier Adventure

We may sail deeper into Nuuk Fjord to Kapisillit, a tiny settlement near the edge of a glacier. This is one of Greenland’s most photogenic spots, with ice calving into the sea and rugged peaks surrounding the village. Go ashore to explore the settlement or trek to the glacier for an unforgettable Arctic experience.

Nuuk – Greenland’s Capital

We arrive in Nuuk, Greenland’s colorful capital city. We’ll dock in the bustling harbor and take time to explore the city’s blend of traditional Inuit culture and modern influences. Highlights include the Greenland National Museum, showcasing preserved mummies from the 15th century, and the iconic Katuaq Cultural Centre. Enjoy a farewell dinner celebrating the adventure with your crew.
